“I’ve done the religion thing. It works for a while.”
If you’ve been reading my blog at all you have probably discovered that I believe in the supernatural. There really is no excuse for powerless Christianity. Over the years I’ve come up with many excuses: “I’m not worthy”, “I don’t have that gift”, “God’s angry with me” etc. You’ve may have tried on a few of those lines yourself!
Recently I was reading some books on the supernatural and as I read I became more and more hungry for the supernatural. I began to ask God for the “Word Of Knowledge”. The Word of Knowledge is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Through this gift God gives a person knowledge of things in another person’s life in order that God might reveal Himself to them.
One day I was sitting in Starbucks enjoying a green tea latte and reading Bobby Conner’s book, “God’s Supernatural Power”. As I was enjoying my drink and feeding my spirit, a man sat down in the seat next to me. As he sat down, the word “divorce” dropped into my mind like a foghorn. I knew immediately that this word was for this guy, but what do you do with a word like that?
I ended up spending about an hour with this man as we talked and built rapport and eventually was able to pray with him. His life was heading for some difficult times. His relationship with his wife had come to a stand still and he was now contemplating divorce. Even in the midst of his hopelessness, God was concerned about this man and was actively working to draw him into the Kingdom…and I got to play a small part in the process!
The word of knowledge opened this man’s heart to hear about God’s heart for him!
I think a lot of Christians already receive words of knowledge regularly, but have been trained through doubt and fear to push them back as “not from God”. Stepping out is risky, in fact many people have defined faith as R-I-S-K! This then brings a question to the surface…do I have genuine faith or do I just have religion and tradition?
I’ve done the religion thing. It works for a while. I’ve done the tradition thing. There are some valuable traditions for sure. But when it comes down to it, they’re just not enough. Genuine faith with risk makes the journey way more exciting and brings a sense of purpose in God’s Kingdom. The Bible tells us we are co-labourers with Christ. God is counting on His people to do their part alongside Him. That’s why He gave us all the tools (gifts of the Holy Spirit).
I leave you with a phrase from the apostle Paul – “eagerly desire the greater gifts”. 1 Corinthians 12:31
